LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR - ASSOCIATE
SUPERVISED BY: SARAH SWAFFORD, LPC-S, REGISTERED PLAY THERAPIST
Hello & Welcome!
First of all, I commend you for making the decision to seek treatment and find a therapist that would be a good match for you.
Now we can see if I would be a good fit for you by telling you a little about myself and my approach. I was born and raised in El Paso, TX and attended UTEP to earn my Masters of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling, which is a CACREP accredited program. My therapeutic approach is what is referred to as person-centered. This means I value the relationship I build with my clients over most anything. One of my first goals is to build my client’s trust by taking a gradual, yet goal oriented approach to getting to know you, your personality, your values, and your hopes for treatment. If appropriate, I also like to incorporate a little humor and casual conversation to ease any anxiety you might have when meeting a new person who will quickly learn a whole lot of things about you.
My specialty areas of treatment include anxiety, depression, and life transitions. I also love helping people make active choices to live a fulfilling life, while also holding space for the rough patches. I do all of this by using my preferred modalities: Person Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The three of these combined means that I am actively listening to you, helping you identify unhelpful thinking patterns, and helping you to create new ones based off of your own individual values. With my client’s agreement, I also find it useful to incorporate some form of creativity or therapeutic activity to help facilitate deeper conversation and the development of coping skills.
In addition to experience in my preferred modalities mentioned above, I have also completed trainings and/or courses in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Sandtray Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mental Health First Aid, and Trauma Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
I hope this helps you make as informed of a decision as possible, I appreciate your time and wish you the best of luck!
Sarah
